  1. This is great advice. I’m very flexible and tend to hyperextend. I have a Baker’s cyst from pre-yoga days behind my left knee that is not painful, but I’m almost sure came about from not being careful of this.

  2. I wish I had known this sooner

  3. Thanks for the advices, soooo useful!!!

  4. thank you for this. excellent as always!

  5. thanks for this good post, just start ashtanga yoga practice and i have hyper joint mobility so the focus about the hyperextension was really interesting. Thanks for your work and see you soon

  6. @robinbrum Being overweight is taxing for the joints, so you need to be extra careful! If it feels too much it probably is. It being strenuous is good, but if it feels too much on the knees it isn’t!

  7. Thank you Esther…I’m always looking for tips on knees as I have an old knee injury that has never quite left me!

  8. Is this safe when you are very overweight? I am 18 stone and have damaged my knees by doing high impact exercise like running…I like yoga but I find some of the moves very strenuous and I do struggle to weight bear on my knees.
Thank you for these great uploads.

  9. Thank you!
Very good timing… for me. Yesterday I had problems with my knees during yoga class. My knees always moved between over extended position and ” just right” positon. I didn’t feel great during the class because of that and I also had problem with the tree and the dancer pose… more than usual :)

Thank you, Esther. If you have some recommandations for me…

  10. Thank you, I always but my foot in the middle! Instead of towards the thumb of the same side.

  11. Perfect timing….my knees have been feeling sore…thanks Esther for focusing on the details…while other teachers are all about the big picture. :)

  12. thanks for this video. I always hurt my knee during yoga ;(

  13. The voice of experience!

Not many yoga (or flexibility) teachers emphasise the support aspect of muscles. This is probably because it probably is not talked about that much and they see the final pose in books or already accomplished masters and think that it is simply enough to mimic any fully “relaxed” position using basic principles.

However, assuming you did not start as a baby, there was a journey to get to that pose and it is different for all. Esther’s videos show that well:)

  14. Thank you for posting this!! Can you show us how to protect our hips and lower back during yoga?

  15. I sure will, Thanks Esther. : ) xo

  21. Thank you! This was so helpful that I hope that you will continue with more videos on knees. : )

  22. Great tips, Esther! Two other things that I’ve learned for protecting the knees: Flexing the foot in pigeon pose, for example, and grounding the pinky toe in standing poses. This is a great start!
