BKS Iyengar 1938 newsreel Part 1 (SILENT)

March 15, 2010

This is a film made by mcpetruk in 1938 showing and shows Krishnamacharya demonstrating yoga. Here we see a young Iyengar (still alive, well, and doing yoga, BTW) doing advanced poses that constitute the advanced A & B astanga series. This is obviously well before Iyengar dropped the vinyasa aspect from his practice and rebranded it as “Iyengar Yoga”, putting greater emphasis on alignment.

  1. Realmente grandioso.Qué facilidad y flexibilidad,y qué dominio de la técnica.
Tendría el maestro por esa época unos treinta años.

  2. so are you doing yoga now

  3. Is this B.K.S Iyengar or Krishnamacharya? It looks like Iyengar as a much younger man.

  4. I intend to resume Yoga in 2010 after years of not doing it.

  8. no doubt they can. not to take away from gymnastics, yoga is a precise science that heels the body. i have known many people heel serious spinal cord injuries by practice of yoga. Iyengar yoga is one of those. many a dancer has gotten back to dancing with the help of yoga after serious accidents..

  12. I don’t think this is B.K.S. Iyengar..

  13. Not primarily, but it is very difficult to have a healthy mind without a healthy body. Primary series of Ashtanga is Yoga Chikitsa – yoga therapy.

  14. He turned 90 in Dec. Still does 3 hours a day of practice plus teaching.
